Sunday Snippet Mar 17 2024

Updated: Mar 17

Welcome to this week's news and views from around the resort.

Getting to know you

This week the focus is on the 2024 HOC - meet 3 of the new committee.

Meet Debbie Chamberlain the current secretary and web manager who will be continuing on with these roles into 2024.

Originally from the UK, Debbie grew up in Leeds, West Yorkshire, after visiting Brisbane for a family wedding in 1999, she fell in love with the sunshine state and emigrated with her 1st husband and baby son, in 2001. A career in government and banking ended in 2018, when she and her hubby Dave, set off travelling in their caravan, along with pooch Buddy. Towards the end of 2020, they decided to put down roots, with a desire to be near family, close to an airport, a cruise terminal and health facilities, Bribie was an easy choice. Moving into GemLife in December that same year, both Debbie and Dave have settled in well and made lots of close friends. She really can't think of anywhere she would rather live. Why be a member of the HOC ?, her answer is simply, if you think something can be improved on, don't sit there moaning, do something to make things better.

Hi my name is Janine Jaavuo and I made the decision to become a committee member of HOC when an email came out stating that we at Gemlife could possibly see the closure of our beautiful club and fabulous amenities due to lack of support from our community.

My husband Arvo and I moved into Gemlife on 26 October 2017. We were so excited even though we lived in a construction site for many months. Many memorable moments happened and the first was having a fence erected to keep our little white dog Ellie off the streets and most importantly to keep her safe and white. The dust and dirt was horrific but we endured it all and I am still here to tell the story.

Sadly Arvo passed away two years ago.

Having lived in many places such as Alice Springs, Nhulunbuy NT, Weipa , Blackwater, and Emerald, I have met a wide variety of people and loved the challenge of settling into a new town with my family, making new friends and becoming part of the community.

Thank you for allowing me to participate as a committee member. I am excited to see what the next year brings.

Hi. My name is Jan Phillips. I grew up in Brisbane, left school at the end of Year 10 and worked in the head office of Shell Oil Co. The older residents in our community will remember the times when data was punched into cards which were then fed into a big old

computer which took up half a room! That was me! I’ve also worked in finance at Griffith University.

I have travelled extensively around Australia and have been residing in GemLife Bribie Island for four very enjoyable years. I’ve been secretary of GemAssist since its inception in 2021 and also the Welcome Group since its amalgamation with GemAssist in 2022.

I put my hand up for a position on the Committee with a view to helping out in this great

community where possible.

A huge thank you to all the Bar vollies for working behind the bar on Saturday night. The CLAPTOMANIACS were fabulous. Great song choices - the entire audience was dancing the night away. And a mega thank you to the Social Group for staging this event. We have got to be the luckiest over-50s resort in the world to have such wonderful people working for our community.

Tennis anyone ????

You don't have to be an Ashleigh Barty or a Roger Federer to join the tennis set here.

It's all about having fun, keeping fit. Whatever your level of tennis, come along and have a go !!!
