Welcome to this week's news and views from the best over 50s resort on the planet (and in Queensland).
There's a lot of stuff in this edition, so you might want to put the kettle on and make yourself a cuppa before you start reading.
CHARITY FUNDRAISER Sunday 4th August
What a fabulous afternoon !! We have an unbelievable wealth of talent here on the island. Well done to all the performers, all the organisers, all the behind-the-scenes people, the bar vollies and of course all the residents who supported the event and raised the colossal amount of $6,200+. A special mention to Ralph and Jo for all their hard work.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT TRIVIA
Congratulations to Music Special Songs winners Eight Pins. Gran Torino won the handicap section, and Pearly Greats decided it was time to win the Wooden Spoon again.
The next trivia is on Wednesday 14 August - Music Australian No 1 Hits. A HUGE opportunity for teams to score 100% in a round. Remember to bring your list of Favourites.
A few words from our hard-working HOC
Residents are asking for more buggy parking but according to our Park Managers there are only 10 buggies registered with them. So, with those numbers, there is sufficient parking for buggies. Please be aware that if buggies are not registered with GemLife, there is no insurance. Do the right thing and register your buggy with the Park Managers. And guess what ??? If lots of buggies are registered then hey presto - we might get more buggy parking !! Any car park spot can be used by 2 or 3 buggies – first in first served, whether it be a car or a buggy or two or three.Â
There was a surprise audit the other day from Moreton Bay Council. If the Inspector had been a stickler, we would have failed the audit and both of our pools would have been closed. The issue is that people are pinning back the gates (on both indoor and outdoor pools) and so the hinges have been damaged. Also the hinges on the Fire Exit Door from the Indoor pool were damaged – the Inspector said the damage appeared to be wear and tear which is unusual for a Fire Door which is only to be used in cases of emergency. I hear a rumour that some of the Aqua Aerobics ladies go out that way. Please do not use the Fire Exit Door. Yes it might save 50 metres or so, but think of the extra exercise gained by walking 50 metres. The inspector said that anyone using the Fire Exit door for a normal carriageway can be fined $880 for each individual. Considering we were let off this time,  the Inspector has warned that he will be back (like Arnie!) Something to chew on - if one pool gets shut down, both will be shut down as our licence covers both pools jointly.
The third issue is that people are bringing their own wine/alcohol into the Clubhouse. We had 2 Liquor Licensing inspectors attend over the last few weeks. If they were aware of people bringing in their own grog then we would have the bar closed down! The bar is the biggest earner here, and if it were to close it would be a financial disaster. Bar prices are the cheapest in Queensland (if not the whole planet). If there is a particular brand of wine you like have a word with the Bar Manager - he may be able to accommodate you. If you bring grog to the clubhouse and you are rumbled, do you really want to be known as the Resident That Closed The Bar.
ROCK N ROLL NITE
Put Saturday 21 September in your diary folks. The Live Band is a GemLife favourite - Goin' Troppo.
A Hot Dog van will be outside the clubhouse from 5pm to 7pm - selling Hot Dogs (really ?) and Hot Chips.
